Mount Teide and the surrounding volcanic landscape in the Teide National Park on Tenerife in the Canary Islands Mount Teide and the surrounding volcanic landscape in the Teide National Park on Tenerife in the Canary Islands

The magnificent, alien landscapes of the Teide National Park formed one of the main highlights of the week that Liz and I spent on Tenerife in the Canary Islands last February.

Here are just two images of the volcano Mount Teide, emerging from the haze caused by the moist air we encountered on that particular day.

Cloud pine trees in the mist in the Forestal Natural Park on Tenerife in the Canary Islands

Well I wasn't expecting to be shrouded in fog during Liz's and my week long winter break on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, but this island has a range of suprisingly rich and varied climate zones which change rapidly as one gains altitude from the sea level resorts on the coast to the sun baked volcanic landscape of the Teide National Park in Tenerife's centre.

The cliffs and coastline from Las Teresitas on the southeast coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands The beach at Las Teresitas on the southeast coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands

One of the very few sandy beaches on Tenerife is at Las Teresitas, which Liz and I visited in passing during one of our expeditions around the island.

Not impressed with the view from sea level, we found a much better vista high up above the beach from where I took these two photos.

Volcanic coastline near Los Abrigos on the south coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands Volcanic rock beach near Los Abrigos on the south coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands

One thing Tenerife hasn't got in abundance is sandy beaches, and I'm glad because what it does have is much more visually stimulating.

These two images are of the same bit of coastline, right in the heart of resortland, and show off the island's volcanic origins in the form of basalt and pumice rocks, worn smooth by the Atlantic Ocean.

Much nicer to look at than a row of sun loungers!

Abstract image of the south coast of Tenerife at night, Canary Islands

To delete, or not to delete - that is the question.

At least, that was the question facing me as I looked at the orange mess on my camera's monitor after capturing the scene that led to this rather unusual nightscape of the south coast of Tenerife.

The Los Gigantes cliffs and coastline from Punta de Teno on the northwest coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands The Los Gigantes cliffs and coastline from Punta de Teno on the northwest coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands

Hard to get to, but well worth the effort.

This is the view from Punta de Teno, right on the northwestern tip of Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

The two images were taken just a few minutes apart, one just before sunset and the other just after.

What a difference a few minutes can make!

The Teno mountains shrouded in mist on the northwest coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands

Tenerife, in the Canary islands, is normally associated with holiday resorts and sun.

But Liz and I found a different, and much more appealing, side to the island on one of our exploratory drives up through the Teno Mountains on the northwestern coast.

Volcanic rock beach near Los Abrigos on the south coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands Porous volcanic rock on the beach near Los Abrigos on the south coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands

As well as being a nice, warm place to go on holiday, Tenerife is fascinating from a geological point of view, with a somewhat turbulent volcanic history to say the least!

Just a short walk from where Liz and I were staying on the south coast we came across this small bay, covered in beautifully weathered porous volcanic rocks.

Time for a photo or two I think!

Time for a bit of housekeeping today here at goHOWiE.com.

We're taking a day's break from the warmth of Tenerife to catch up on four time lapse videos that I've created since our return home, showcasing the chilly beauty of North Wales and with a foray over the border into England for good measure!

Panoramic image showing the volcano Mount Teide on Tenerife in the Canary Islands

Despite a persistent layer of thin low cloud there was no way that Liz and I were going to miss seeing Mount Teide in all its splendour during our week's stay on Tenerife in the Canary Islands last month.

So some high altitude excursions in our hire car were called for.

Panoramic image showing the volcanic landscape of La Gomera in the Canary Islands

I'm glad the coach driver on our day to trip to La Gomera, the second smallest of the lovely Canary Islands, knew what he was doing, as the roads through the volcanic interior of the island were challenging to say the least!

Mind you, with stunning overlooks like this one to the north of the island to be enjoyed and photographed, a white knuckle ride was a small price to pay!

Just a short ferry ride from Tenerife lies the beautiful island of La Gomera, the second smallest of the Canary Islands, where Liz and I spent a day sightseeing by coach.

There was plenty of lovely scenery to admire, but the photography proved somewhat challenging.

One of the things I was really looking forward to during Liz's and my February trip to Tenerife was heading up to the Teide National Park surrounding the volcano Mount Teide in the centre of the island, in order to enjoy seeing and photographing the dark night sky.

And I wasn't disappointed!

Time lapse video showing sunset, twilight and dusk overlooking a sea of billowing clouds with the volcano Mount Teide in the background, Tenerife, Canary Islands

The iconic view of the volcano Mount Teide on Tenerife in the Canary islands, rising up out of a sea of billowing cloud as the sun sets.

This was one of my 'must get' views that I had listed to take during my wife Liz's and my week long winter break on Tenerife, and conditions couldn't have been better.

Captured as a time lapse video covering sunset and twilight, we had an unexpected bonus towards the end of the shoot.

Time lapse video showing clouds sweeping over pinnacles of volcanic rock at the Zapato de La Reina viewpoint in the Teide National Park, Tenerife, Canary Islands

Unbelieveable other-worldy scenery greeted Liz and I as we emerged from the clouds and up into the huge volcanic caldera that comprises the Teide National Park on Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

This time lapse video features just one of the amazing views of offer, as seen from the Zapato de La Reina viewpoint with high clouds sweeping by over twisted magma upwellings.

Time lapse video showing heavy clouds in the Teno mountain range near Masca on Tenerife in the Canary Islands

Tenerife is an island with two distinct climate zones, as Liz and I discovered as we drove from our resort on the south coast to explore the Teno mountains in the northwest corner of the island.

I'm just glad I had a waterproof coat in the boot of our hire care!

Time lapse video showing dramatic swirling clouds seen from above from the Teide National Park, Tenerife, Canary Islands

Wow!

Just back for a week on Tenerife in the Canary Island with some amazing photos and time lapse clips to share.

Liz and I found that, for most of the week, the best scenery and weather was to be found at high altitude in the Teide National Park, which is where I shot this time lapse video from, looking down on the tops of the swirling clouds below us.
