Back to sunny Crete here at goHOWiE.com, this time featuring another aspect of the island that suprised Liz and I during our two week stay - the abundance of small, beautifully placed and appointed Greek Orthodox churches.

This example is the striking church of St Nektariosat, overlooing the seaside village of Milatos on Crete's north coast.

Time lapse video showing clouds over the famous lone tree reflecting in Llyn Padarn in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales

A couple of weekends ago I suffered a minor disaster as my trusty old Canon 6D got splashed by a wave while filming the storm Brian at Colwyn Bay on the North Wales coast.

The electrics are behaving very strangely now, so it's in for a repair and I'm hoping it's not too badly damaged.

So it's a good job I kept my by now ancient Canon 5D (circa 2007), which had to be dusted off and pressed back into service this weekend just gone.

I'm glad to day the old girl performed beautifully considering her age, and was still able to shoot the hundreds of still images required for this lovely time lapse video of clouds passing over the unusually still waters of Llyn Padarn, with my favourite tree in the foreground.

Beach and shoreline at Milatos on the north coast of Crete Pebble tower on the beach at Milatos on the north coast of Crete

Another relatively quiet spot on the otherwise touristic north coast of Crete was the seaside village of Milatos, a place Liz and I visited a few times during our stay on the island.

The pebble beach was especially nice, with lovely colours in the sea and stones, together with some mini feats of civil engineering!

I love the dynamism of the sea, especially when there's some decent wave splashes to photograph, such as these three instances pictured at Malia beach on the north coast of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.

Looking out of my window on a grey, wet and chilly October morning in North Wales I'm reminded through these images of blue skies and warm sand while paddling in the Mediterranean on the north coast of Crete.

Suddenly I feel a lot more cheerful!

Ceramic souvenirs on sale at the Homo Sapiens museum near Kera, Crete Ceramic plaques on sale at the Homo Sapiens museum near Kera, Crete

As well as photographing beautiful scenery when I'm away on holiday with my wife Liz, I also like to hunt out the little details that are unique to the local culture, such as these rather quirky ceramic plaques, on sale at the equally quirky Homo Sapiens museum gift shop.

October 16th 2017 and the skies above North Wales were lit by a blood red sun as hurricane Ophelia made its presence known with some amazing atmospheric displays.

I took full advantage of the hour long show, taking hundreds of still images for a time lapse sequence, together with some real time video of glowing clouds passing over the red face of the sun.

The Aposelemi Reservoir, Crete Rugged landscape near Kera on the Mediterranean island of Crete

Driving the narrow mountain roads around the interior of Crete was certainly an experience, but well worth the effort and petrol with beautiful views like these on offer, seemingly around every bend.

One of the most interesting places that Liz and I visited during our two week stay on the Mediterranean island of Crete was the little island of Spinalonga, just off Crete's northeastern coast.

These two panoramic images both feature Spinalonga, one captured while visiting the island itself, and the other while driving the spectacular mountain roads high above this stretch of coast.

In terms of spectacular scenery, Liz and I found the whole of Mirabello Bay on the northeastern coast of Crete to be somewhere very special, and we spent a lot of our two week holiday driving around its margins, sightseeing and photographing.

Here are two panoramic collages taken from opposite sides of the bay, one near the town of Sitia to the south and one by the island of Spinalonga in the north.

One of the nicest aspects of the holiday that Liz and I enjoyed on the Mediterranean island of Crete earlier this year was finding relatively unspoilt seaside villages to explore and cool off in.

Two of our favourite places are shown here as panoramic collages, Milatos and Mochlos on the northeastern coast of the island.

Liz and I were blown away by the variety and majesty of the scenery on offer during our two week stay on the island of Crete in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Here are just two examples of the landscapes of central Crete, just a few miles inland from the north coast, but a world away from the tourist beaches that people usually think of when Crete is mentioned.

Panoramic view over the village of Kalamafka of the island of Crete

During this grey and wet weekend in North Wales I cheered myself up by working on some of my images from the trip Liz and I took to Crete a few weeks ago, fondly remembering basking in the heat and sunshine.

Well the tan's rapidly fading now, but the photos I took will last a lot longer.

This panoramic collage shows the view over the picturesque village of Kalamafka, in the relatively untouched region of central Crete, on a lovely sunny afternoon.

A brief interlude from the blue skies, warmth and sunshine of Crete, back to the cold, dark, wet, cloudy and beautiful, coastline of North Wales at Penmon Point on the Isle of Anglesey.

This time lapse video of clouds at dusk streaming over the iconic Penmon Point lighthouse was supposed to be of something else entirely.

Time lapse video showing the sunset and twilight over Mirabello Bay on the coast of Crete

One of the loveliest locations Liz and I found during our two weeks on the Mediterranean island of Crete was Mirabello Bay, featured in this time lapse video of the sunset, followed by stunning twilight colours and the onset of night as the lights of the towns around the bay take over from the natural light of day.

As usual, a click on the thumbnail will take you to the video page to watch the clip are read a bit more about it.
