The story behind this image

The Isle of Anglesey, just off the North Wales coast, boasts a plethora of beauty spots where one can while away the hours just soaking in the ambiance and taking the odd photo or hundred.

And one of the most serene and enigmatic is to be found at Penmon Point, right on the southeastern tip of the island.

With its iconic lighthouse just offshore, whose mournful bell tolls out across then water to Puffin Island every half minute, and the geologically fascinating rock formations making up the foreshore, Penmon Point is somewhere you can lose yourself at for hours, just watching the tide coming in and listening to the lonely cry of the gulls.

Which is where I found myself on New Year's Eve 2019, with a few hours to spare to stand, watch and photograph.

I timed my arrival before sunrise, so I could shoot the hundreds of still images I needed to create my Penmon Dawn Timelapse #1 video, followed by my Penmon Tide Timelapse #4 video.

But even after three and a half hours perched on a slippery rock in the cold breeze I couldn't tear myself away from this wonderful place without capturing just a few more images.

Seeking out an alternative viewpoint, I made my way along the steeply shelving pebble beach to a rocky outcrop, partially submerged by the rising tide and giving me a pleasing view back along the shoreline to the lighthouse and Puffin Island beyond.

And it was there that I took this image, slowing the exposure down to a lengthy six seconds through the use of a Lee 'Little Stopper' neutral density filter in order to render the lapping waves as a pleasing blur, contrasting with the sharply defined lighthouse, island and rocks.

Finally it was time to pack everything away and head back to my car for the drive home, but what a privilege to be able to spend time soaking in the atmosphere in this unique place.
