Postojnska Caves #7

Photo inside Postojnska caves, Slovenia

The story behind this image

During our day stopover in Slovenia, as part of a Mediterranean cruise on the P&O liner Arcadia (have to get a plug in there somewhere!), Liz and I signed up for an excursion to the Postojnska caves.

We were just overwhelmed by the beauty and majesty of this underground fairytale land, with so many fantastic and huge stalagtites, stalagmites, columns, rock fans and so on.

All the trips though the caves involved a ride by electric train, which is quite an experience in itself, followed by a guided walking tour through a good part of the cave system, taking in the all the best bits.

Flash photography is banned so to get picutes of these wonders I had to crank up the ISO on my Nikon D3100 to very high levels (for me anyway), open up the aperture as wide as it would go, switch on the lens stabilisation and use my best hand holding photographic techniques to try and get reasonably sharp images.

Quite a challenge, but well worth the effort to capture some of the beauty and wonder of these amazing caves.

Visit if you get the chance. They're not to be missed.
