The story behind this image

North Wales, with its proximity to the prevailing westerly winds from the Atlantic ocean and its mountainous terrain, attracts more than its fair share of wet weather.

But who wants boring blue skies and sunshine all the time?

As an outdoor photographer I relish these ever changing weather patterns, as I can visit the same local locations over and over again and never see them in the same light twice.

Such as my local hill, Moel Famau, the highest peak in the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Northeast Wales.

On a clear day you can see for miles from up here, but more often than not the slopes of Moel Famau are wreathed in fog and low cloud, with condensed moisture dripping off the foliage and your waterproofs.

Ideal conditions for photographing the trees of the Clwydian Forest, with the bare trucks of the densely packed firs forming an abstract vertical pattern in the gloomy light, softened by the mist.

For an outdoor photographer there's no such thing as bad weather, so long as you can find the appropriate subject.
