The story behind this image

Midsummer on the North Wales coast, and with sunrise at 4.45am there's plenty of opportunity for me get up, drive to some of my favourite spots and photograph the dawn before heading back home to get ready for work.

On this occasion I pulled in on the newly refurbished promenade at Colwyn Bay, just as the sky was starting to pick up the twilight colours of orange and gold along the horizon, while retaining the deep blue of twilight overhead, about an hour before sunrise proper.

This is a wonderful colour combination under any circumstances, but I wanted something extra in my images to add interest to the horizontal bands of colour, lovely though they were.

Fortunately for me, the planners of the refurbished promenade had included some of those popular laser cut steel sculptures on the seafront, comprising a family group doing various seaside related activities.

Quite a surreal effect with the two dimensional people in silhouette against the glowing sky, and an ideal addition to my composition, adding much needed interest to the colourful background.

Nice one Colwyn Bay planning department!
