The story behind this image

The Atlantic coast of North Cornwall is just one long stretch of stunning scenery, featuring huge sea cliffs punctuated by secluded coves, bays and inlets.

One such bay, rarely visited, is the lovely Duckpool, situated at the end of the wooded Coombe Valley just to the south of Hartland, right at the top of the county.

My wife Liz and I made a point of coming here twice during our two week holiday spent exploring Devon and Cornwall, such was the allure of this wild and unspoilt place.

At low tide, Duckpool has the most amazing beach, bounded on either side by towering cliffs and comprising a mixture of pristine sand interspersed with fascinating rock outcroppings.

And it was from the edge of one of those cliffs, following the southwest coastal path, that I captured this scene looking out over some of those rock formations, with just a few tiny people relaxing on the sand nearby.

I was going to photograph this scene without the holidaymakers in the composition but thought better of it.

Those miniscule figures give a real sense of the enormity and emptiness of this amazing location.
