The story behind this image

The small 'olde worlde' fishing village of Port Isaac on the Atlantic coast of North Cornwall has become something of a tourist mecca, with full car parks and coach tours abounding during the peak summer season.

Which is why I'm glad that my wife Liz and I arranged our two week explore of Devon and Cornwall in early September, just after the school holidays had ended and things had quietened down somewhat.

Fitted snugly between two headlands and protected from the ocean's wrath by two impressive breakwaters, the steeply angled cobbled streets leading down to the harbour are lined with tasteful pastie shops and the usual outlets promoting Cornish cream teas.

The overall effect is charming, and the views of Port Isaac from the headlands and beach are particularly picturesque, well worth a sustained photographic effort to capture something of the atmosphere.

This particular view shows the harbour from above on a lovely sunny day, partway up a steep street leading up the headland.
