The story behind this image

During our two week stay spent exploring the beautiful landscapes and coastlines of Devon and Cornwall my wife Liz and I drove past Widemouth Bay on the Atlantic facing coast of North Cornwall on a number of occasions, heading for less well developed bays and inlets further south.

So it was only towards the end of our stay that we actually stopped here for a cliff walk and stroll along the extensive surfing beach.

Once on the actual beach we were rather amazed by the very strange rock formations from which the cliffs backing onto the beach were formed, so I took plenty of photos, capturing different arrangements of colours and erosion patterns.

Wanting to know more I googled the geology of this stretch of coast, learning about the extensive fossil beds and world class geological features to be found here.

And to think we nearly didn't stop at Widemouth Bay, thinking it was just a tourist trap for surfer dudes!
