The story behind this image

Looking upwards towards the top of a nearby mountain from the promenade at Primosten on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, my wife Liz and I were puzzled by what seemed to be a brightly lit tower pointing heavenwards.

So we decided to explore and see how close we could get, just to find out what this strange looking artifact actually was.

So after an exciting drive up a single track unmade road, followed by a short but steep climb, we found ourselves at the top of this unnamed hill.

Imagine our surprise when what we had guessed was a communications tower turned out to be the amazing and impressive 'Our Lady of Loretto' statue, complete with cafe and gift shop to boot!

Apparently this is the largest statue of its kind in the world, and on a good night can be seen from Italy.

But what appealed most to Liz and I was the intricate patterns of small mosaic tiles, arranged in whorls and swirls all over the statue.

Not what we were expecting at all, and a lovely visual treat to end our day with.
