The story behind this image

The two week holiday that my wife Liz and I enjoyed in Devon and Cornwall in September 2019 took us all over the region, taking in the beautiful landscapes and coastlines.

Normally we like to go to the less popular, out of the way places, but one tourist venue we didn't want to miss was the seaside village of Clovelly on the North Devon coast.

Set up as a sort of living museum, Clovelly attracts coachloads of visitors to its very pretty steep cobbled streets and harbour, complete with the compulsory gift shops and cafés of course!

So we spent a good part of the day making our way down to the harbour, and then back up again, with plenty of pauses for me to take multiple photos, trying my best to include as few people as possible in the compositions.

This photo shows a little group of cottages just above the harbour, adorned with hanging baskets of flowers and set in a cobblestone courtyard, typical of the 'olde worlde' charm of Clovelly.

Mind you, the glare coming off those whitewashed buildings gave me some exposure issues, and I had to significantly underexpose this image to stop the walls from becoming featureless sheets of white.

This is one reason I always shoot my pictures in the RAW file format, becasue with all the data from the camera's sensor availbale to me I was able to increase the brightness of the very dark shadows in the underexposed image without degrading the quality of the final processed composition.
