The story behind this image

During the two week holiday that my wife Liz and I enjoyed in September 2019, spent exploring the beautiful scenery of Devon and Cornwall, we racked up a lot of miles driving around the numerous coastal and inland locations we had planned to visit.

Most of the time we were driving along narrow country lanes to remote seaside hideaways, squeezing past oncoming vehicles and dodging into farm gateways to avoid tractors.

But I didn't mind the driving, as there was always plenty to see and enjoy as we rolled along.

Every now and then we would come across an unexpectedly lovely or unusual view on our travels which would require a rapid bit of parking skill and a quick dash out and back, camera in hand, to capture the scene.

Such was the case on this country lane on the Hartland peninsula in North Devon, where Liz and I were both entranced by this avenue of mature trees, forming a complete arch over the road with sunlight filtering through the verdant foliage.

I could only stop for a few seconds to grab just a couple of images before diving back into the car and driving off to avoid blocking the road, but the scene was just too perfect to just drive by.
