The story behind this image

Driving down through Snowdonia from our home in North Wales, aiming to spend a day enjoying the beautiful scenery around Barmouth and the Mawddach estuary, my wife Liz and I decided to go off piste for a while, taking the B4407 road through the mountains from Pentrefoelas, heading towards Ffestiniog and the incredible slate workings at Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Normally one of the wettest places in Wales, the rolling hills around Ffestiniog were basking under unseasonably warm, dappled September sunlight as light, fluffy cumulus clouds drifted by overhead.

So I wasn't going to let such beautiful scenery flash by without stopping to admire and photograph the landscape from a few different angles as we parked up in convenient laybys along the way.

It was well worth a short delay on our journey southwards, after all, I may never see Blaenau under such lovely conditions again!

This panoramic collage takes in the whole sweep of the hills around the slate workings, which can be seen in the centre of the composition.
