The story behind this image

Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands is an island of two halves.

The south coast is heavily developed with tourist resorts and hotels everywhere you look, whereas the north coast of Gran Canaria is relatively unspoilt and much more natural.

So you can guess where my wife Liz and I headed to most in our little hire car.

Fortunately it didn't take long to drive from our resort at Taurito up to the north coast, passing through some stunning volcanic scenery on the way.

One of our 'go to' places on the north coast that we remembered from our last visit to Gran Canaria three years ago was the charming Puerto de La Aldea, with its tiny harbour and pebble beach, backed with impressive cliffs and mountains and washed by the deep blue waters of the Atlantic ocean.

This image features a battered old wooden boardwalk on the pebble beach, and not a sunlounger in sight to spoil the view!
