Towards the end of our stay exploring around Lake Como in the mountains of northern Italy my wife Liz and I, after having consulted our guide book, decided on a trip north from our apartment at Varenna to have a look around the Monastary Santa Maria di Piona, right by the lakeshore.
We weren't sure what to expect, never having visited a monastary before, but with its peaceful and quiet ambiance, together with some lovely old buildings and spectacular scenery, we weren't disappointed with our visit and spent a good couple of hours just walking around enjoying the architecture and gardens.
This image shows one of the monastary olive groves, shining in the late morning sun and backed by impressive mountains in the far distance.
