The story behind this image

It was the final day of a three day long weekend in the beautiful Lake District, and my wife Liz and I were taking the scenic route towards the M6 motorway, driving along through the autumnal mist and rain. (Those lakes are there for a reason!)

By now, most of the trees had shed their leaves in preparation for winter, but every now and then a burst of colour would appear by the side of the road as we drove past a beech tree still clinging onto its autumn foliage.

Passing along the side of Ullswater, we saw this remarkable display of colour approaching so, instead of driving past, I pulled into a convenient layby for one last photo shoot before heading back to normal life again.

A brief foray into the rain, just a short distance down this roadside path, and I was confronted by this magnificent old beech tree, not only with most of its leaves still in place, but also with its branches overhanging the path in a most photogenic manner.

Well worth exposing the camera to a dose of rain in order to capture such a beautiful scene, with those gorgeous colours at their best under the diffuse, shadowless light.
