The story behind this image

During our week long winter break on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands one of the places that was on my wife Liz's and my 'must see' list was the Timanfaya National Park.

Comprising more than one hundred volcanoes, the landscape is like nothing on earth, with twisted and tortured lava puncuated with volcanic cones.

The park is closely managed, and you can't just wander about on your own for fear of damaging the fragile lichens that are slowly bringing new life to this desolate wasteland.

We timed our visit for mid-morning, and even though it was February Timanfaya was already very busy, with a queue of cars waiting to get into the car park.

It must be crazy here in high season!

Our entrance fee to the park included a coach tour around a circular road that took you into the heart of Timanfaya.

Private vehicles are not allowed on this road so the only way to get to see the volcanic landscape up close was to take the coach, so we did, of course.

I was hoping that the coach would stop to let us out for a photo or two at designated viewing spots, but alas that was not the case, and we had to stay inside the coach for the whole tour.

The scenery was spectacular, but trying to photograph it through the tinted window of the coach proved challenging, with reflections, vibrations and colour balance all conspiring against me getting a useable image.

In the end I managed just a couple of vibration and reflection free shots, with the very green colour cast from the window tint fixed in Adobe Lightroom.

Another reason I always shoot RAW files.

This shot shows the typical volcanic landscape of Timanfaya, with just a hint of plant life starting to colonise the lava field.

Maybe staying on the coach was the right ecological thing to do after all!
