The story behind this image

The autumnal colours in the woodlands of North Wales are just beautiful to behold, and during the coronavirus lockdown of October 2020 my wife Liz and I spent quite a few days re-aquainting ourselves with our local beauty spots, such as Wepre Park in Connah's Quay.

As usual, everywhere we went I carried my camera and tripod with me, capturing images and videos of the vibrant colours all around me.

And the tripod was important, as the low light levels in the deeper parts of the woods meant that I couldn't handhold the camera and achieve a sharp image, especially with a polarising filter fitted to bring out those gorgeous colours.

But in a break with perceived photographic wisdom, I decided to take some handheld shots with a slow shutter speed, deliberately moving the camera to induce an ethereal blur in the final image.

For this image I pointed the camera downwards at the carpet of fallen leaves, crunching underfoot, and slowly rotated the camera while pressing the shutter release.

And I'm really pleased with the outcome, with the rotational blur creating a lovely autumnal feel to the image.
