The story behind this image

The storms of February 2020 over the North Wales coast certainly gave rise to some interesting, if a little frisky, photo opportunities.

Which is why my wife Liz and I braved the elements and the blustery onshore gale at Llandudno West Shore beach to take a bracing stroll along the promenade.

Mind you, we didn't get far, turning round after being hit in the face by flying saltspray and windblown sand, and it was quickly back to the car the watch the show from the relative comfort of our vehicle, rocking on its springs in the gusts.

But I just couldn't let such drama go un-photographed, so it was back out into the elements for me to take a series of images showing waves crashing and spray flying over one of the breakwaters further along the beach.

Shooting with a long telephoto lens in a high wind can be quite tricky, as using a tripod to get a steady shot becomes a nonsense in these coditions, so I upped the ISO and shutter speed and braced myself on the open door of my car to take the photos.

Of the dozen or so images that I captured in that brief photo session, only two were of sufficient quality to process further.

Still, well worth getting a bit battered to experience and photograph such dramatic weather.
