The story behind this image

Beautiful by day, mysterious by night, the mountains lakes and forests of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales are an ever changing sensory wonderland, and I'm so blessed to live within easy reach of such loveliness.

My wife Liz and I had spent the afternoon driving around and hiking in the snow capped mountains, and we were on our way home at twilight, passing through the town of Llanberis on the shores of Llyn Padarn when we decided to stop to look at the recently installed sculpture of Excalibur, the legendary 'sword in the stone'.

Having spent fifteen minutes or so photographing Excalibur I then turned my attention to Llyn Padarn itself, flat as a millpond in the still night air, reflecting the snow capped mountains with stars shining brightly overhead.

The scene was just wonderful, with the odd streetlights providing patches of yellow light to contrast with the deep blue of the night sky overhead.

So it was another fifteen minute pause while I photographed the view, trying various exposure setting and compositions until I was satisfied I'd captured some of the ambiance of this most enigmatic of landscapes.
