The story behind this image

One of the most dramatic peaks in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, this is Pen Yr Ole Wen (Head of the White Slope) at the southern end of the Carneddau mountain range.

Its conical shape is instantly recogniseable, and, positioned at the right angled juncture between the Ogwen and Nant Ffrancon valleys, Pen Yr Ole Wen makes a great waymarker for the low flying fast jets out of RAF Valley as they scream around its flanks.

But all was calm on this beautiful spring afternoon as my wife Liz and I made our way up from the visitors' centre at the head of Ogwen valley to LLyn Idwal at the base of the Glyderau range of mountains.

Looking back from the shores of Llyn Idwal gave us this great view of the flanks of Pen Yr Ole Wen, towering majestically over the surrounding landscape.
