The story behind this image

A rare spell of good weather during the Christmes week of 2019 was all the incentive my wife Liz and I needed to get our boots on and head out to the Snowdonia National Park for sime much needed fresh air and exercise.

We chose the wonderful Nant Ffrancon valley for our hike, with views along the valley to the impressive Glydreau and Carneddau mountains at the far end.

Of course, we punctuated our walk with quite a few photographic pauses, with me doing my best to convey the delight of being outdoors in such magnificent scenery.

It's a good job I decided to lug my tripod along though, as the contrast in brightness between the sky and land was far too great for my camera's sensor to capture in a single exposure, and my usual method of using a graduated neutral density filter to darken the sky wasn't possible here as I would have darkened the mountain peaks as well.

So with my camera firmly mounted on my tripod I took 5 seperate exposures of this scene, each one stop apart, in order to capture details in the brightest part of the sky and the darkest parts of the landscape, and this final image is a result of HDR blending those exposures in Adobe Lightroom.
