The story behind this image

A stunning day in May in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, and my extended family, including grandchildren, made the most of it with a gentle climb up from the Ogwen Valley to the beautiful and dramatic lake, Llyn Idwal at the base of the Glyderau mountains.

The weather for hiking and photography was perfect, with warm sun, a cooling breeze and broken cloud cover painting the landscape below in a patchwork pattern of sunlight and shadow.

Of course, I made the climb laden down with camera, tripod and pockets full of filters, spare batteries and spare memory cards, ready for any photographic opportunity that came my way.

And come my way these opportunities certainly did, as we circumnavigated Llyn Idwal with views such as this one opening up in front of us.

To the north is the shapely peak of Pen Yr Ole Wen, the mostly southerly summit in the Carneddau mountain range, while to the south is the unmistakeable cornish pastie shaped Tryfan, part of the Glyderau mountains.

I was unable to fit this amazing view into a single exposure, so I took a series of overlapping frames for a subsequent panoramic merge in Adobe Lightroom.

The only way I could do justice to this epic landscape.
