The story behind this image

Los Gigantes on the west coast of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is famous for one thing only - the huge and dramatic sea cliffs that stretch northwards from the seaside town all the way to the northwestern tip of the island at Punto De Teno.

So of course, a visit to Los Gigantes was high on my photographic list of 'go to' places for the week that Liz and I spent on Tenerife in early 2017.

After finding a back street to park in, we made our way down to the shoreline and, to our suprise, we found a beach of actual sand (black volcanic), strewn with rocks fallen from the cliffs above.

With the sun about to set and the light turning golden, I noticed waves washing around a large volcanic boulder, giving lovely patterns in te moving waters as the waves broke and then receded, catching that lovely warm light.

So I sat down on the sand in front of said rock, camera braced on my knees, and photographed with a relatively low shutter speed as the waves rolled in, broke and then ebbed away.

I took a few dozen images from this spot with the waves in various stages of breaking and receding, and this is one of my favourites, with the wave washed boulder and ocean run-off set against the dramatic backdrop of the ocean and towering sea cliffs.

A lovely view captured in the best possible light just before sunset.
