The story behind this image

When my wife Liz and I go on holiday we spend most of our time exploring out of the way places away from the tourist hotspots.

Which is why we were found driving the twisting hairpin roads around the volcanic interior of Tenerife during our week long winter break in the Canary Islands at the tail end of January 2020.

One route we took was northwards up to Santiago del Teide and beyond.

The scenery was more than impressive, with huge volcanic outcroppings dwarfing the improbable roads that had been forged through this wilderness.

With such a narrow road, festooned with blind corners, stopping to take photographs was tricky to say the least, but every now and then a layby appeared, and I took every opportunity to stop and admire the view.

This image is typical of the sort of landscape we were travelling through, and to my mind, much more appealing than the heavily developed resorts along the south coast.
