The story behind this image

The vast caldera of the ancient Las Canadas volcano that dominates the centre of Tenerife in the Canary Islands is a geological wonderland of lava fields, improbable rock formations and the imposing cone of the Mount Teide volcano.

The predominant colours of this other-worldy volcanic landscape are reds, browns and ochres, but in a few places some pre-historic tectonic turmoil has spewed out ore-bearing rocks of a completely different hue.

Which is why my wife Liz and I stopped in a convenient layby on the TF-21 to admire the azure tones in these rocks just off the road.

How else would you want to spend a week on Tenerife other than exploring such unusual beauty?
