The story behind this image

The offshore turbines of the Gwynt y Mor windfarm make a dramatic addition to this image of a golden sunset over the Irish Sea, as seen from Rhyl on the North Wales coast.

For a few weeks around midsummer the sun sets far to the northwest up here at 53°N, which lines the event up nicely with the turbines.

So I keep a beady eye on the weather forecast, hoping for a clear evening so I can watch and film the sun setting into a clear horizon.

Of course, this being North Wales, clear skies are something of a rarity, which proved to be the case on this evening, as I shot the hundreds of frames needed to create my Rhyl Sunset Timelapse #3 video.

But, as every cloud has a silver lining, even though I didn't get a clear sunset I did get to see and film lovely display of twilight colours in the skies over the turbines as day dissolved into night.

This individual image was taken early in the shoot, as the sun was approaching that bank of cloud on the horizon that I mentioned and the turbines were set as stark silhouettes against the glowing skies.
