Fairbourne Time Lapse #1

The story behind this video

The promise of good weather on a Spring Saturday in April encouraged my wife Liz and I to explore the beauties of Wales a bit further afield than our usual stomping grounds of the North Wales coast and the northern half of the Snowdonia National Park.

Instead, we headed cross country to the mid Wales coast and the southern half of Snowdonia around the much loved mountain of Cader Idris.

Having spent a few hours exploring the lovely Cregennan Lakes we then headed down to the coast at Fairbourne to catch the views up the Mawddach estuary, past the famous rail and footbridge to Barmouth, to the mountains of Snowdonia in the distance.

We arrived pretty much at the turn of the tide, and we were intrigued to stay and see how the sea would cover over this huge area of sand stretched out before us.

Of course, I wasn't just going to sit there and watch the tide come in without shooting a time lapse sequence of the event, so over the next two hours we enjoyed the warm sun, munching on pizza while Liz knitted away and I fiddled with exposure settings as the waters of the Irish Sea swept in across the exposed sand.

We stayed till just after sunset, at which point nearly all the estuary was filled by the tide, before reluctantly packing everything away and driving home from this gorgeous spot.

I subsequently read on the internet that Fairbourne is to be abandoned to the sea.

I really hope not, as although we only stayed a short while, the place really got into my psyche and I'd love to go back to see it again and maybe shoot some more video.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this gentle scene that I so enjoyed filming.
