Having heaved my aging body and fully laden LowePro up to the top of the Little Orme limestone escarpemnt overlooking Llandudno Bay on the North Wales coast in time to catch the sunset over the town I was somewhat disappointed as the sky clouded up and the sun disappeared behind the murk.
I thought about climbing back down again, but having put so much effort into getting up there I was loth to give up so easily.
So I dutifully set up my camera and tripod and set the intervalometer off, taking an exposure every ten seconds but with no expectation of anything spectacular happening.
The time for sunset came and went with nothing but a slow reduction in the light levels to show for it, but then a hint of pink appeared in the clouds out to sea as the sun, now below the horizon, found a gap in the clouds and sent its dying beams to underlight the wrack.
The warm light soon spread westwards until the skies over the Great Orme on the far side of Llandudno Bay caught fire in a dazzling display of pink, yellow, orange and red light.
Imagine my delight at having decided to stick it out up on my lofty perch, being able to witness and film such fleeting beauty.
The light show in the heavens ended all too soon, but then the artifical lights of Llandudno and the traffic along the road below me grew brighter and brighter against the darkening skies, providing yet another visual treat for me to end my day with.
With the sky now devoid of natural light it was time pack my gear away and tentatively make my way back down the rocks of the Little Orme and back to my car for the drive home, elated at having seen such a wonderful display of light when I had all but given up hope.
