Mawddach Estuary Fog Timelapse #1

The story behind this video

A sunny Friday afternoon in late April 2018 found my wife Liz and I making one of our longer excursions to a welsh beauty spot, Cregennan Lakes above the Mawddach Estuary in Snowdonia on the welsh coast.

As we were driving along the Mawddach valley, before turning off for the climb up to the lakes, we noticed what we thought was a forest fire filling the sky ahead with fumes.

But as we climbed up to the lakes themselves we realised that what we thought was smoke was, in fact, a huge, dense, billowing sheet of sea mist coming in off the Irish Sea and filling the Mawddach Estuary with an impenetrable blanket of fog.

Up high at Cregennan Lakes, at the foot of Cader Idris, the sun was shining and we had a lovely hike along the lakeside paths before returning to the car park.

We had planned to drop down to the coast at Fairbourne after our exercise, but after checking that the fog was still covering the coast and valley we decided to stay put in the sunshine instead!

So I took advantage of the opportunity to set my camera up on a rock overlooking that impressive blanket of fog and shoot the hundreds of still images required to make a time lapse clip of this most unusual weather phenomenon.

So Liz and I enjoyed half an hours' sunbathing on a warm rock in the peace and quiet while my camera did its thing.

What a great way to spend an afternoon in one of the most beautiful places in the world!
