A day of rain and high wind had put paid to any photographic excursions so instead I'd spent my spare time doing admin in my office at home.
But after a while staring at a screen I'd had enough and decided to brave the elements by heading up to my local hill, Moel Famau in the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), just a short drive from my home in North Wales.
I arrived in the car park about half an hour before sunset in the teeth of a howling gale, wondering why on earth I'd been daft enough to venture out as the storm wracked skies raced by overhead.
But then the magic started, as the sun found a few gaps in the cloud cover to the west, shooting beams of intense light into the cloud mass above the Vale of Clywd, stretched out below me.
OK, time for action.
But the wind was so strong that I feared for my camera's survival, perched on its tripod as it needed to be to record stills for a time lapse of the wonderful light show playing out above me.
I've had a couple of blown over tripod accidents in the past, as my battle scarred Canon 6D proves with its cracked body casing, patched up with epoxy resin (still works fine by the way!), so I was very wary of the same thing happening again.
Fortunately the car park had a low stone wall at its edge, so I set up my tripod as low as it could go, with just the camera peeping over the wall which lessened the effect of the wind somewhat, although I did find myself being blown backwards on occasion in especially strong gusts.
Was it worth the effort? Of course it was, as the light show in the clouds overhead just got better and better, culminating in the whole sky seemingly on fire before the sun finally sank below the western horizon and the stunning colours faded away to the greys and blues of twilight.
Mind you - I was glad to finally stop, pack everything safely away and head back home, much refreshed by my time away from the computer!
